The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the pro sports teams that still have a Native name. The hockey team says the name honors Black Hawk, a chief in the Sac and Fox Nation of Illinois.
But Vincent Schilling thinks the name and the team logo (right) should be changed.
“At first glance, you may not see anything other than a cartoonish Native man,” he says. “But this is not OK.”
- Paint on a Native man’s face is specific. It’s not always war paint, as many people assume. Designs represent family groups or tributes to important leaders.
- Feathers are sacred to many Native nations. Logos showing them, and fans dressing up in them, disrespect Native people.
